“Where women are respected, there gods dwell. Where they are disregarded, there all deeds go in vain.” (Manusmrti lll.55)

In Vedic times women were respected and held in high esteem. This did not mean that a woman’s sadhana should mirror that of a mans, or that one was better than another. In fact, it was understood that our bodies and physiological needs do differ throughout the different stages of life, and Yoga practice is to be tailored carefully to each of these crucial stages. As the body was sanctified and viewed as a temple for the Spirit it was considered an obligation for each human being to take good care of the body making it a fit vehicle for the soul’s journey. This was done in a multitude of ways including the practice of asana and pranayama.

In Yoga: A Gem for Women, Geetaji Iyengar writes: “A woman goes through four stages of life; childhood, adolescence, middle age and old age, through which physiological changes occur and internal conflicts arise that need to be addressed. The three milestones in a woman’s life are menstruation, pregnancy/delivery and menopause. Stabilization of one’s physical and mental states during these times is achieved by asanas and pranayama” (Geetaji Iyengar).

In this virtual workshop, Gloria Goldberg will share a wealth of teachings all focusing on women’s practice including sadhanas for the different stages of life.

The Multifaceted Wisdom Teachings of the Yoga Sutras
with Gitte Bechsgaard Ph.D. & Gloria Goldberg
11:00am-12:30pm Pacific Time – Lecture
1:00-2:30pm Pacific Time – Asana
3 hrs/day (1.5 hr lecture and 1.5 hr asana sadhana)
$180.00

DESCRIPTION:
In this four day workshop we will immerse ourselves in the practice of Iyengar Yoga together with the study of Patanjali’s philosophy of Sadhana (spiritual practice). Through the integration of theory and practice, students will learn the ways in which Iyengar’s methodology is infused with the ancient wisdom of the Yoga Sutras. Instruction for practicing yoga in alignment with foundational spiritual principles will be covered.

Teachings will include a multifaceted picture of  “sadhana” or spiritual practice, something which Iyengar himself portrays as holding four aspects: Shodhana (purification), Shoshana (integration), Shobhana (auspicious demonstration), and Shamana (calming and heart centering). Teachings will also draw from the four modules taught in the more extensive Patanjali Yoga Sutras course: Yoga psychology, The two wings of Yogic discipline, Contemplative practice, and Meditative deepening. Days will be spent in lecture, Iyengar Yoga practice, and in traditional recitation of sutras and mantra sadhana.
